By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I can see an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges I faced was making friends. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days before the term kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to leave and meet others. However, as I sit here today, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with peers in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate your connection with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, let it be your authentic self. With a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find others who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can often challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. There were a few things that assisted me through that sense of inadequacy, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something doesn’t make sense to you, I can nearly promise that others are puzzled as well. So, reach out for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding and keep in touch with us regularly throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role provided me an opportunity to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and this is undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university life is to seize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!
In general, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be mitigated with the plethora of support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has demonstrated how to enjoy myself even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
