Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

A primary and quite daunting challenge was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, several days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too daunted to step out and introduce myself. As I sit here now, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I realized that taking a plunge at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker chances and events to aid in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one principle, it should be to be yourself. There are countless diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to encounter people like you.

Another hurdle was the demanding workload and complexity of the content. There was definitely a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment doesn’t always boost your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly guarantee several others share that confusion. So, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Request help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly among the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this part of university is to capitalize on the assistance being provided. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be eased by the multitude of support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated, and it has taught me how to have fun even in the face of stressors like exams and deadlines.
