Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I realize I have experienced a year full of personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often stands as one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re considering enrolling, it could be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day in my room, far too daunted to emerge and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly affirm that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here, both at the university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all of which kicked off with casual conversations with individuals in parallel situations. So, what did I realize? I discovered that taking a plunge at the start of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking events available to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that being authentic is vital. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.

An additional challenge was the academic burden and complexity of the material. There was certainly an increased intensity compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. What carried me through this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re unclear about something, I can almost assure you that others are as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my following point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They relate to us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so is one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated with the various support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
