Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt a mix of anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead as I prepared to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging in something unfamiliar was not characteristic of my previously reserved and timid nature. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This concern is a common one among new university students. On the very first day of moving into my residence, just before the term began, I remained in my room the entire day, too apprehensive to interact with new people. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some fantastic friends during my time at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, starting from brief conversations with others in similar circumstances. What is my takeaway? It’s crucial to take a step forward at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, that’s okay! There are plenty of ice-breaking events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that authenticity is essential. With a diverse array of individuals in both the course and the university, you’re bound to find those who share your interests.

Another challenge was managing the workload and complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was significant, and the jump from the first to the second term was even greater. Being in such a demanding environment can test your confidence; you may feel inadequate in comparison to others. What aided me was the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If something is unclear to you, chances are others are feeling the same way. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most essential lesson for first-year students. Reach out to peers and faculty for help!

This brings me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They remain engaged with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, and I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned taking steps earlier – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This role enabled me to connect with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My key takeaway is to make the most of the support provided. You can never have excess assistance!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety about university are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the support of staff and fellow students. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
