Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently a significant worry for new students. On my initial day in student housing, I remained in my room all day, too scared to meet anyone. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships during my time at university. I discovered a second family at Imperial just by initiating casual conversations with others in similar situations. I realized it’s important to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready, don’t stress! There are numerous social events designed to help you connect. Be authentic, and you’ll discover others who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the difficulty of the material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even steeper rise from the first to the second term. It’s easy to feel inadequate, but keep in mind that everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If you’re confused about something, chances are others are too. So, reach out for assistance. This is essential in your first year. Look for support from both classmates and faculty!

The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize the challenges students face. They reach out to us regarding our concerns. I only utilized pastoral support towards the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I took a bold step by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year, which allowed me to connect with the faculty. There are many avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s worthwhile! Seize the opportunities for assistance available. You can never have too much!

This year has shown me that anxious feelings about university are often misplaced and can be eased with the guidance of staff and peers. I’ve learned that I’m never alone and how to find joy even amid the stress of exams and deadlines.
