Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Jumping straight into the deep end was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year rich in personal growth, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles I faced was forming friendships. This certainly ranks among the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be one of your primary worries. On my first day moving into my accommodation, prior to the start of term, I spent the entirety of the day cloistered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Sitting here now, I can say with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all began with a bit of small talk with others in comparable situations. So, what did I come to understand? I learned that it’s always best to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t feeling ready or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that the most important thing you can be is yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the course and the university, you’re sure to discover people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be daunting for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few aspects helped me navigate those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you that there are others who also do not understand. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson I learned in my first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the staff!

That leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They are empathetic towards students and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. I spoke of taking leaps at the beginning; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to build relationships with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s definitely one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the help provided. You can never have too much!

In general, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support avenues available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
