Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months earlier, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and countless enjoyable moments! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current status?

One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more fearsome aspects of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as an upcoming student, it may be one of your chief worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I was too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, I can assert without hesitation that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and in this program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I glean? I realized that it’s always advantageous to make a move at the year’s outset. If you don’t quite feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also came to understand that if you can embody one thing, be true to yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you are sure to find like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the volume of workload and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always easy on your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me in navigating that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same waters. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that there are others who equally do not understand. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to internalize during the first year. Reach out for help from your peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are phenomenal. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I spoke of taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to get to know faculty, and it’s undeniably one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance being offered. You can never have an excess!

In a broader sense, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both in anticipation of and during university, are nearly always misplaced and can be eased with the multitude of support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has demonstrated how to find enjoyment alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
