Back in October 2022, ten months prior, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to begin my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. This kind of leap was foreign to my formerly shy and introverted self. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and how do I perceive my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This undoubtedly ranks among the more daunting aspects of starting university, and if you are an incoming student, it might rank high on your list of worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in small conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always the best approach. If you’re not ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to help you build connections with others. I also learned that if you are to be anything, be true to yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel a sense of inadequacy. A few factors helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that there are others who are also puzzled. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done it earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s unquestionably one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the various support resources offered by faculty and fellow students. It has enlightened me that I am never alone and how to find joy while navigating stressors such as exams and deadlines.
