Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your principal worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? It’s advisable to make a bold move at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! Numerous ice-breaker events are available to assist you in connecting with others. Moreover, if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another difficulty was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels and even more so from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear, there are most likely others who are equally confused. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from both peers and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep in touch with us throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had started sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I took one by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson is to take full advantage of the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the assistance available from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and has taught me how to have a good time despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
