Back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the brink of beginning my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This tends to be one of the most anxiety-inducing elements of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester’s start, I spent the whole day confined to my room, far too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. However, today, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I’ve learned that taking a bold step at the onset of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to help you engage with others. I also discovered that being true to oneself is essential. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was noticeably a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more substantial jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in this kind of environment can take a toll on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar situations. If something confuses you, I can nearly assure you there are others who feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This could be the crucial lesson to absorb during your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for support!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges faced by students. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our struggles. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had made use of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your overall experience! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to leverage the resources available to you. You can never receive too much assistance!

All in all, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
