Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown wasn’t something my previously introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
A key and intimidating challenge at the outset was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of starting university, and for prospective students, it may pose a significant worry. On my first day of moving into my residence, just a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve built some of my closest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I realized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is vital. If you feel unprepared, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breakers and events designed to help you engage with others. Additionally, I discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to find others who share your interests.
Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was indeed significant, and there was an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in this environment can impact your self-esteem; you might observe others diligently studying and feel insufficient. What assisted me was the reminder that everyone is in a similar boat. If you’re struggling to grasp something, it’s likely that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is arguably the most crucial lesson in the first year. Reach out for help from your peers and faculty!
This naturally leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t avail myself of the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to utilize the support provided. You can never have an excess of help!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated with the assistance available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated and how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
