Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was far from the norm for my previously timid and withdrawn self. Reflecting on the past year, I can recognize a time brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I gleaned from this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most formidable hurdles was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day concealed in my room due to feeling too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel equipped or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker occasions and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, let it be your authentic self. There’s a myriad of diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the demanding workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few aspects aided me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you there are at least a handful of others who also don’t comprehend. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to acquire in the first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They are empathetic towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps at the start—I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to seize the support that’s made available to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has imparted the lesson that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are nearly always unwarranted and can be mitigated through the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has revealed ways to enjoy myself amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
