Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current state?
One of the primary and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your largest worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the most exceptional friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to assist you in connecting with fellow students. I also found that if you can embody one quality, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those similar to you.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can test your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly guarantee that others feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with us and keep the lines of communication open throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances earlier – I embraced one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My key lesson from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the multiple support resources accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
