Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was quite outside the comfort zone of my previously shy and reserved nature. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking elements of beginning university, and for those potential students reading this, it may be your primary concern. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, today I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships here at the university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others who were in similar situations. So, what was my takeaway? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody anything, be yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can take a toll on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several things aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re unclear about something, I can nearly assure you that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t really make use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best moves you can make for yourself! My key insight from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support provided. You can never have an excess of help!
In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the various support systems accessible from staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy amidst stressors such as examinations and deadlines.
