Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most formidable challenges I encountered was establishing friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more frightening features of embarking on university life, and if you are a future student, it might be one of your major worries. On my inaugural day moving into my housing, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to step out and introduce myself. Today, however, I can assuredly say that I’ve made some of the finest friends here at this university and within this program. I’ve crafted a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I found that boldly taking a leap at the year’s beginning is always advantageous. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to facilitate connecting with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s authentic. With so many varied individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably an increase compared to A-levels, and in some ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors assisted me through that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something isn’t clear, I can almost assure you there are others who are equally puzzled. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They sympathize with students and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t leverage the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I made one at the year’s inception by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the best choices you can make for your personal growth! My primary insight from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support offered. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the extensive array of support available from staff and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like examinations and deadlines.
