Back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Braving the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I realize that the year has been filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained from this past year, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of beginning university is often one of the most nerve-wracking, and if you are an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day of settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term kick-off, I spent the whole day secluding myself in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. However, I can now proudly affirm that I have forged some of the finest friendships I have ever experienced at this university and in this program. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I gain from this? I discovered that embracing new experiences at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not quite prepared or comfortable, don’t stress! There will be ample opportunities for icebreakers and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals within the course and the university, you are sure to find those who connect with you.

Another significant challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a noticeable increase from A-level studies, and in some respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a demanding environment can put a strain on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the realization that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost assure you that others feel the same way. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to grasp during your first year. Engage with your peers and faculty for help!

This leads me to my subsequent observation. The faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They are genuinely invested in your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They show compassion towards students and sustain ongoing communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking chances – I indeed took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson regarding this facet of university life is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has illustrated that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the various support avenues provided by both staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment while managing stressors such as examinations and deadlines.
