Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can say with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker occasions and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be authentic. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find people like you.
Another challenge was the academic workload and complexity of the material. It was certainly a step up from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel like you’re falling short. A few strategies supported me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are others who don’t either. So, seek assistance. This may represent the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one at the year’s onset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the help that is available to you. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
