Ten months have passed since October 2022, a time when I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was far from what my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Now, looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current stance?

One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student perusing this, it may be among your greatest concerns. On my inaugural day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, far too daunted to venture out and meet new people. However, today I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with light conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I’ve learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always the best approach. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to connect with those who resonate with you.

Another significant challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater jump from the first semester to the second. Being immersed in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. A few factors aided me in navigating this feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from both your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show empathy towards us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have an excess of it!

In summary, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the various support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
