Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating elements of commencing university, and for any future student, it could be a significant worry. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before classes started, I remained in my room all day, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assertively say I have made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known, both within this university and throughout my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with peers in similar circumstances. So, what did I realize? It’s wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous icebreaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With a variety of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded folks.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the challenging content. There was a definite escalation from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can be taxing on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, there’s a good chance others don’t either. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out for help from your peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to interact with the faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that apprehensions about university are often unfounded and can be eased with the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I’m never alone and taught me how to have a good time even with pressures like exams and deadlines.
