Exactly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and abundant enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often ranks as one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodations, just days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with some casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what has come to light for me? I’ve learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to assist in connecting with others. I’ve also realized that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to encounter people like yourself.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the challenging material. There was definitely a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger jump between the first term and the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same circumstances. If something is unclear, I can nearly assure you that others find it perplexing too. So, reach out for assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Seek support from your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the struggles students face. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with the staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It’s shown me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to relish the experience alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
