Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyable experiences! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This typically concerns new students greatly, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it may also be on your mind. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, just prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and socialize. Today, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships during my time here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I realize? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is beneficial. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized the importance of being authentic. With a diverse array of individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a significant leap from A-levels, and an even more considerable transition from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might feel lacking compared to your peers. Several factors aided me through this, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar circumstances. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely that others don’t either. Hence, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson from the first year. Reach out for support from fellow students and staff!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are remarkable. They are invested in your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I mentioned taking chances – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become familiar with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it is among the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary conclusion is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that apprehensive feelings about university are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support present from both staff and students. It has illustrated that I am never truly alone and has taught me how to relish my experience despite the pressures from examinations and deadlines.
