Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year that has been filled with personal growth, obstacles, and fun. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the foremost and most daunting obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating parts of embarking on university life, and for prospective students, it may be a major concern. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself to others. Yet today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this institution and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what did I discover? I realized it’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, that’s alright! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to help you engage with others. I also found that being authentic is vital. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the program and university, you are sure to meet those who connect with you.

Another hurdle was coping with the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a significant shift from A-levels, and even more so from the first to the second term. Existing in such a challenging environment can impact your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. What aided me was the realization that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for support from both peers and staff!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and are aware of the hardships students experience. They relate to our circumstances and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway is to fully utilize the available assistance. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased with the aid provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone and has shown me how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
