By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, this might be your main concern. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I’m pleased to declare that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both within this university and my course. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with a bit of small talk with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I come to realize? I realized that it’s wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or personally comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one role, be yourself. With such a diverse group among the course and university, you are destined to meet those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the workload and the challenging content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. Several factors assisted me in overcoming that feeling, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can almost assure you that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students can face difficulties. They empathize with our situations and uphold ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had accessed it sooner. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to establish rapport with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are many ways to connect with the staff, and it’s one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to maximize the support available. You can never have too much!
In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be soothed with the support systems available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated and how to have fun regardless of stressors like exams and deadlines.
