Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to commence my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and where am I now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is often among the most daunting facets of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might be a significant worry for you. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before the term started, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too nervous to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I have made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with brief conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaker activities and events designed to help you connect with others. Additionally, I learned that if there is one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always great for your self-esteem; you might witness others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me combat that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you struggle to grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are others who also find it perplexing. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the teaching staff!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking chances – I did take one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues to get to know the faculty, and it’s unquestionably one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway in this area of university life is to fully utilize the support offered. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support resources made available by the staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone, and it has demonstrated to me how to have fun even alongside challenges such as exams and deadlines.
