By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling nervous and uncertain about the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing uncertainty was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Now, upon reflection, I can see that this year has been filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and where am I standing now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and for prospective students, it may be a significant worry. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day locked in my room, too fearful to step out and meet new people. Today, I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with brief conversations with others facing similar experiences. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is beneficial. If you’re not prepared or at ease, do not fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also found that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse group at both the course and university levels, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with you.

Another significant challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable rise in difficulty compared to A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can dent your confidence; observing others studying may make you feel inadequate. What aided me was the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, chances are, others are in the same boat. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty for support!

This brings me to my next observation. The staff in the Materials department are outstanding. They are committed to your success and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They empathize and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, yet I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to build connections with staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are various avenues to get acquainted with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway is to utilize the support provided. One can never have an excess of help!

All in all, this year has shown me that apprehensive feelings about university are often unfounded and can be alleviated with the assistance available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone and how to find joy amid stress factors like exams and deadlines.
