Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is typically one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be one of your major concerns. On the day I moved into my dormitory, just a few days ahead of the semester starting, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Today, however, I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking bold steps at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you find yourself unprepared or uncomfortable, fear not! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to help you mingle with others. I also learned that if you can embody anything, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to connect with people like yourself.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies helped me navigate those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling with a concept, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are wonderful. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They connect with students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps before – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get to know the staff, and it’s certainly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to leverage the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even alongside pressures like exams and deadlines.
