Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I perceive a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the earliest and most intimidating obstacles was establishing friendships. This is often one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too daunted to emerge and interact with others. Today, however, I can assert with confidence that I have forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s advantageous to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re hesitant or uncomfortable, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events will be available to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that authenticity is vital. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge involved the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that others do as well. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for help!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They relate to us and maintain consistent communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had acted sooner. I previously mentioned the importance of taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to build relationships with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your well-being! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to seize the assistance that is available. You can never receive too much help!

In conclusion, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and throughout university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated with the various support resources that staff and fellow students provide. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find joy despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
