Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, fears, and uncertainties about my future. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in Materials Science and Engineering. Leaping into such a new environment was far from the comfort zone of my formerly timid and reserved self. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted on me, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was the quest to form friendships. This certainly ranks among the more intimidating facets of beginning university life, and if you are contemplating this as an incoming student, it might be your primary concern. On my first day of moving into my dorm, a few days ahead of the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to venture out and greet anyone. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships at this university and within this program. I have created a second family during my time here at Imperial, and it all stemmed from engaging in light conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I found that embracing new experiences is crucial at the year’s outset. If you’re not feeling completely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking chances and activities will arise to facilitate your interaction with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals within the program and campus, you’re certain to cross paths with like-minded people.
Another obstacle I had to overcome was the demanding workload and the challenge posed by the course content. There was indeed a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be quite daunting for one’s confidence; you may observe your peers studying and question your own capabilities. Several factors assisted me in navigating through that sensation, one of which was the understanding that everyone shares a similar experience. If something confuses you, I can almost assure you that several others feel the same way. So, seeking assistance is vital. This might be the most crucial skill to acquire in your first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help from your classmates and faculty!
This leads me to highlight the exceptional faculty in Materials. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and recognize the struggles faced by students. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the support available to me until the year was almost over, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I did embrace one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is tremendously valuable. There are many ways to build rapport with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this component of university life is to fully utilize the support systems available. You can never receive too much assistance!
In general, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during my university journey, are generally unfounded and can be alleviated through the numerous support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated and has taught me how to balance enjoyment with the stressors of exams and deadlines.
