Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the last academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable experiences! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it may be among your greatest apprehensions. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire time secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, as I sit here now, I can assert with confidence that I have forged some of the finest friendships I could ever hope for at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this experience? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Plenty of ice-breaker chances and events will be there to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody anything, be your authentic self. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was dealing with the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable elevation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant advancement from the first term to the second. Being launched into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that all students are experiencing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can nearly assure you that others are navigating the same situation. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Look for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They are dedicated to your success and deeply understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy towards students and keep in regular contact with us throughout the year regarding我们的 concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking bold steps – I did make one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s unquestionably one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of the university experience is to leverage the available support. You can never have an overabundance of assistance!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that the anxious feelings prior to and during university are often unfounded and can be eased with the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to have fun despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
