Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year newcomer. Daring to dive in headfirst wasn’t something my once-shy and reserved nature was accustomed to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating aspects of commencing university life, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent an entire day secluded in my room, overwhelmed by the thought of stepping out and greeting others. Today, however, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve cultivated a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in light conversation with others in similar situations. So, what did I gain from this experience? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking activities and events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, it should be authenticity. There is such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university; you’re bound to find people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I had to navigate was the workload and complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a significant leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even steeper increase from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes challenge your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. There were a few strategies that helped me cope with that sensation, one being the realization that everyone shares the same struggles as you. If you’re perplexed by something, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who are equally confused. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for support from both your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed, and they understand that students face difficulties. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. Holding this position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous opportunities to get to know faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this particular aspect of university life is to make the most of the support being offered to you. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be alleviated through the numerous support options accessible from both staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has equipped me with the ability to enjoy myself despite the stresses that come with exams and deadlines.
