Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons have I learned this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the primary and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is generally one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a future student, it may be among your top concerns. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day hiding in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say that I have made some of the finest friends I have ever had at this university and in this program. I have found a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what have I gathered from this? I realized that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaking opportunities and events to enable you to connect with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. With such a diverse range of people within the course and university, you are sure to encounter others like you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant rise from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even more substantial jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment doesn’t always boost your confidence; you may see peers studying and feel less than adequate. Several factors aided me in encountering that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same journey. If you do not grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are others who share the same confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to internalize in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and acknowledge that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and keep constant communication throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I touched on taking leaps before – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with faculty, and it is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this phase of university is to make the most of the assistance offered. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be alleviated with the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
