Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Dashing into the unfamiliar was not something my previous shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I realize I’ve experienced a year of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a major concern. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to step outside and introduce myself. Today, I can assertively claim that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with simple conversations with others facing similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be plenty of ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you engage with others. Additionally, I learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to meet people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the amount of work and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in many respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same journey. If you don’t understand something, I can nearly assure you others don’t either. So, seek help. This could be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Request assistance from your fellow students and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They understand students’ struggles and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance that is offered to you. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never truly alone and how to find joy amid challenges like exams and deadlines.
