By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my typically timid and reserved nature was used to. Now, reflecting on the past year, I see a period rich with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I learned this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it might be a significant concern for you. On my first day moving into my dorm, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I was too daunted to step out and introduce myself to other students. However, sitting here today, I can assertively state that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was initiating small conversations with others in similar situations. So, what insights have I gained? I realized that making a bold move at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you should embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to meet people like yourself.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the difficulty of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, a much larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can sometimes be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me through that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is navigating similar experiences. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that there are others sharing your confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely desire your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to fully utilize the support that’s available to you. You can never have too much!

In general, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both in anticipation of and during university, are rarely justified and can be alleviated by the multitude of support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
