Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about my future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was developing friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. During my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. What have I discovered? I realized it’s crucial to take a step forward at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t ready or feel uneasy, no problem! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. Moreover, if you can embody one trait, be genuine. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the demanding workload and the complexity of the content. There was a distinct increase in difficulty from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can test your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What supported me was the reminder that everyone faces similar challenges. If something confuses you, I can nearly guarantee that others are perplexed too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp during the first year. Reach out to peers and staff!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They exhibit empathy and maintain open lines of communication regarding our difficulties. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build relationships with the staff, which is priceless. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to seize the help available. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are typically unfounded and can be eased with the assistance provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated and how to have fun even amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
