Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most formidable hurdles was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more daunting facets of beginning university, and for those of you reading this as future students, it might be at the forefront of your worries. On my initial day moving into my housing, a few days before the term kicked off, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, far too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Sitting here now, I can assertively say I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in small talk with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always the best approach. If you’re feeling a bit unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events will be there to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one trait, let it be authenticity. There are so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re destined to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being tossed into such a setting can sometimes be challenging for your confidence; you may observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. Several things aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you there are at least a handful of others who are equally puzzled. So, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware that students may face challenges. They show compassion towards students and consistently communicate with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly invaluable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance offered to you. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the diverse support resources accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find joy amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
