Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved personality was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This can undoubtedly be one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it might rank high among your concerns. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester kicking off, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, far too daunted to venture out and meet others. As I sit here now, I can assert with confidence that I have made some of the finest friends I have ever had, both at university and in this program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with light conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is advisable. If you do not feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker gatherings to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be genuine. With a variety of personalities throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the demanding workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-level studies, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can take a toll on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel underwhelmed. A few factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone faces similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly guarantee that there are others who are equally confused. Thus, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They understand our struggles and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I did not really utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had commenced earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous means to connect with staff, and it is among the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the support provided. You can never have too much assistance!

In conclusion, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased by the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and submission deadlines.
