Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension and uncertainty about the future. I was starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and fun! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is frequently a primary worry for new university students, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be on your mind as well. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too nervous to step out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly affirm that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships here at the university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which began with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? It’s advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel ready, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned the importance of being authentic. With such a diverse array of people at the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct increase from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can test your confidence; you might feel inadequate compared to your peers. What aided me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most important lesson learned in the first year. Seek support from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking risks—one I took was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are many avenues to meet faculty members, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has taught me that anxiety regarding university is often unfounded and can be mitigated with the support provided by faculty and peers. It has illuminated for me that I am never truly alone and how to find joy despite pressures such as examinations and deadlines.
