Approximately ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unknown was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and where do I stand today?
One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is definitely one of the more frightening aspects of commencing university, and if you’re considering this as a prospective student, it may be among your top worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the beginning of the term, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. However, I can now affirm that I’ve forged some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever known, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what have I gleaned? I realized that taking a chance at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, fret not! There will be countless ice-breaking occasions and activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With such a wide array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in many respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being placed into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insignificant. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Reach out to your classmates and faculty for support!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to the students and consistently communicate with us throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by serving as a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to embrace the assistance offered to you. You can’t have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone, and it has demonstrated how to find enjoyment alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
