Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was set to commence my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it could be among your biggest worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. However, today, I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I learn? I learned that it is always wise to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if there is one thing you can be, it is to be yourself. With a diverse group of people across the program and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded individuals.

Another hurdle was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment doesn’t always boost your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors helped alleviate those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you encounter something you don’t understand, I can nearly assure you that there are others who are also confused. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Seek help from both peers and staff!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to get acquainted with the staff, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to maximize the help available. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the various support systems available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
