Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to begin my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained from this past year, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too frightened to emerge and meet others. Today, though, I can proudly say that I have established some of the greatest friendships here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with others in the same predicament. So, what did I grasp? Taking a chance at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not ready or comfortable, that’s okay! There will be countless ice-breaking activities designed to assist you in connecting with others. Also, if you can be anything, be authentic. With a plethora of diverse individuals across the program and campus, you are sure to find like-minded peers.

Another challenge involved the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being propelled into such a setting can undermine your confidence; witnessing others studying may leave you feeling inadequate. A few strategies aided me in this situation, one being the recognition that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something unclear, I can almost assure you that others don’t grasp it either. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most vital lesson to adopt in the first year. Reach out for assistance from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students face. They show empathy and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until late in the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this portion of university life is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have an excess of support!

All in all, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both pre-university and during, are often unfounded and can be diminished through the various support options offered by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone and has taught me how to enjoy life despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
