By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what insights did this year offer, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my first day settling into accommodation, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to step out and introduce myself. However, today I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others who were in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? I learned that taking bold initiatives at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not yet ready or at ease, don’t fret! There are several ice-breaker activities designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear elevation from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can test your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you others are in the same position. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the hurdles students encounter. They show compassion and keep open lines of communication about our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I spoke of taking bold steps earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to get acquainted with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My principal takeaway is to make the most of the resources available. You can never have too much assistance!

In conclusion, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be alleviated with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It’s demonstrated that I am never truly alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
