Ten months prior, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not typical for my once shy and reserved nature. Looking back now, I can see a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating tasks was forming friendships. This often represents one of the most intimidating parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my move-in day, mere days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet people. Yet, sitting here today, I can firmly state that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within my course. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in light conversation with others in the same situation. So, what did I discover? I found that taking the first step at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker events and opportunities to facilitate connection with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find others who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always easy for your confidence; witnessing peers study may leave you feeling inadequate. A few elements assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that others do not as well. So, request assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to acquire in the first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty members in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They connect with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the support options until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I did make one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is tremendously valuable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the opportunities for help that are presented to you. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has illuminated that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased through the plethora of support resources accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment alongside challenges such as exams and deadlines.
