Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back at the previous academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it might be one of your major worries. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, just days ahead of the semester’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Now, I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what’s my takeaway? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always the best route. If you feel a bit unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to help you meet new people. I also learned that the most important thing is to be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals in the program and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the demands of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being abruptly placed in such an environment doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you might observe your peers studying and feel less competent. A few things aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the realization that everyone shares your struggles. If you find something challenging, I can almost assure you that others do too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and keep in regular contact with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the close of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university is to seize the support offered to you. You can never have an excess of help!
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the myriad support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never truly alone, and it’s taught me how to have a good time amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
