Not long ago, I completed nine months of my stay in London. While it may not seem like an extended period, I’ve gained a wealth of experience. London buzzes with life, characterized not only by its diverse housing options but also by its vibrant communities. Students have a plethora of choices readily available. Both student residences and private accommodations provide amenities such as ensuite and suite bathrooms, shared and private rooms, studio flats, and house shares. Domestic students can conveniently arrange apartment viewings, whereas platforms like Rightmove, Zoopla, or SpareRoom enable international students to explore potential housing online, review facilities, and access public transport links.
During my housing hunt, I aimed for a room in Central London to stay near major landmarks, social hotspots, and Imperial’s campus. The city is segmented into six zones, with the first two being the most central. London boasts a superb public transport system, comprising the underground (tube), buses, and trains, simplifying navigation and inter-zone travel. I intended to minimize travel expenses as moving between zones can cost up to £5.25 daily. I opted to walk shorter distances rather than take a bus or tube. However, oyster card options have made commuting to university more affordable. Moreover, London Overground and National Rail services extend beyond the Underground network, connecting areas outside central London. Ticket prices for inter-zone travel on these services differ depending on distance and each train company’s fare structure. Central London hosts many attractions, which contributes to higher living costs. Luckily, I studied at university with a friend, and we split a room, significantly reducing our rental expenses. I preferred living in intercollegiate student residences to connect with peers from diverse backgrounds and similar age groups, which is more challenging to find in private rentals.
Proximity to grocery stores was essential for me. Common supermarket chains include Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Co-op, with budget-friendly alternatives like Aldi, Lidl, and Iceland. Being close to vital shops such as supermarkets and pharmacies saves time on errands, particularly during exam periods.
Selecting a neighborhood is a daunting task. London’s ethnic communities enhance its cultural landscape, presenting a range of neighborhoods. Numerous international students in London seek environments that mirror their home country. Southall in West London is known for its sizable South Asian community with Indian eateries, grocery shops, and ethnic clothing stores. Brixton in South London is celebrated for its Afro-Caribbean community and lively music culture. Chinatown, located in the center of London’s West End, boasts countless Chinese restaurants, shops, and cultural festivities. These represent just a few illustrations of community neighborhoods.
The ideal areas for residing in London depend on your preferences and requirements. While looking for a new place in London, celebrate the diversity and richness of its housing options, investigate cultural enclaves, and relish the convenience and allure of this astonishing city.
