Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This undoubtedly ranks as one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it might be one of your chief concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I was too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and in this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and all it required was a bit of small talk with peers in similar circumstances. So, what did I realize? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in several respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always easy on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly promise there are others who are equally perplexed. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for assistance from both your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely wish for your success and acknowledge that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year about our challenges. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke about taking leaps at the onset; I took one by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s unquestionably one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the support being offered to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are almost always baseless and can be mitigated through the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to relish my experience alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
