Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Probing into the unfamiliar was not something my former shy and reserved self was accustomed to. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as a period of personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my housing, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too overwhelmed to venture out and meet new people. However, today I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what have I taken away from this? I learned that it’s always best to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t worry! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also understood that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those like yourself.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was definitely a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first semester to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be daunting for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If something is unclear to you, I can almost promise that others are in the same position. So, reach out for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to acquire in the first year. Seek help from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to thrive and acknowledge that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t completely take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it truly is one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to leverage the available support. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased through the various support services offered by staff and peers. It has revealed to me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to embrace enjoyment despite challenges such as exams and deadlines.
