By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty over what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I perceive a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of commencing university, and for prospective students, it may pose a significant worry. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entirety of the day in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I learn? It’s most effective to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker events designed to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle I faced was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a noticeable transition from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can influence your self-esteem; you may feel insufficient in comparison to peers. What aided me was the realization that everyone shares similar experiences. If you find something challenging, chances are others do too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most essential skill to cultivate in your first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to both peers and staff!
This brings me to another important point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the struggles that students encounter. They engage with us regularly throughout the year regarding our issues. While I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had utilized it earlier. I talked about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to become familiar with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
Ultimately, this year has demonstrated that feelings of nervousness regarding university are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the aid provided by staff and fellow students. It has enlightened me that I’m never alone and shown me how to have fun despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
