Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unfamiliar was not an experience my previously timid and introverted self was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year given me, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking elements of commencing university, and if you are a future student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day settling into my residence, just before the term commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, far too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual chats with individuals in comparable situations. So, what have I discovered? It’s favorable to take a chance at the start of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and gatherings to facilitate connections with others. I’ve also realized that if you can embody anything, be yourself. With the abundant diversity of people throughout the program and university, you’re sure to meet those who resonate with you.
Another significant challenge was managing the workload and complexity of the content. There was unquestionably a leap from A-levels, and in many respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a setting can be a test for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something challenging to comprehend, I can almost assure you that others do too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain consistent communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I referenced taking leaps previously – I did take one by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of apprehension, both before and during university, are frequently groundless and can be mitigated through the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
