By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I now recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This aspect is frequently one of the most intimidating when starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term, I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all originating from light conversations with peers in similar circumstances. What have I learned? Taking a chance at the beginning of the year is advisable. If you’re not prepared or at ease, that’s okay! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist in connecting with others. Also, if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another hurdle was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even larger one from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can impact your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this, one being the reminder that we’re all experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to understand something, it’s likely that others are too. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for support from your peers and faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing dialogue with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to utilize the resources available to you. You can never receive too much support!
In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings about university are often unfounded and can be alleviated by the support accessible from both staff and students. I have discovered that I am never alone and how to find joy amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
