Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting back, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most formidable challenges was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more frightening elements of starting university, and if you’re a future student, it might be your greatest concern. On the first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at this university in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what wisdom did I gather? I learned that it’s important to take a leap of faith at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events designed to aid you in connecting with others. Additionally, I learned that if you can choose to be one thing, be authentic. With a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.
Another hurdle was the workload and difficulty of the content. There was undeniably a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes be challenging for your confidence; you may notice others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that there are others who also don’t grasp it. Therefore, ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my ensuing point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this part of university is to leverage the support provided. You can never have an excess of assistance!
All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be eased with the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to enjoy myself even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
